Dell Vostro 1000
Posted in Uncategorized | Comments OffIn may 2008 I bought a Dell Vostro 1000 notebook with the following specification:
- AMD Turion X2 TL60 (2×2.0Ghz)
- 2 GB DDR2 Dualchannel 667Mhz
- 160 Gbyte Western Digital 7200 rpm SATA
- ATI Xpress 1150 with 128 mb dedicated memory (able to run several games except top notch new games)
- 8x DVD+/-RW
- 6 cell rechargable battery w. 56Wh
- Vista Home Premium
- Works 9
- etc…
I got several discounts so in the end I paid 349 eur including shipping and including taxes :).
Till now I’m really satisfied with it as it fullfills all my needs and it’s also fully linux compatible except the wireless which only works with ndiswrapper (I installed the R17*.exe with ndisgtk). But unless you have that file it’s really no problem and works very stable. I didn’t install slackware on it as I always do on my workstations. This time I installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) on it and the only important thing to remember is to choose the safe graphical mode while the Ubuntu setup booted. You can install the 32 or 64 bit edition of Ubuntu. They both work :).
I was always against Ubuntu for some reason but it’s really relaxed and I really enjoy it because I don’t need to do anything to get something to work…you simply click and click, click, click and click :P…
However, my opinion to Dell changed a lot because they gave so much value for so few bucks and believe me when I say you don’t get any better for that money.
At work some customer ordered a Fujitsu notebook (Esprimo mobile) that was around 600 eur equipped with intel hardware, 1GB ram, some sis graphics onboard and a 120 gb sata…the first thing I noticed was that the keyboard was bowing while typing…the second thing that bugged me was the lid because when you pushed it a little you could see your finger affecting the display! In fact you could easily damage the display..,
Also the whole keyboard becomes very hot while you are working with it and that’s because there are hardly any louvers/core ducts.
And now don’t start to laugh or cry when I tell you that this Esprimo mobile has a touchpad that doesn’t have a scroll area so you can’t just scroll with your touchpad…you have to use the two buttons beneath in combination with the touchpad to scroll.
Really, there is a noticably difference in the quality…the Dell notebooks really have a high quality.
My recommendation :).
